The most compelling thing to me about my work is the process itself. I’m most intrigued and stimulated by the brush to canvas contact and especially by the unknown aspects of the painting. When working on a piece, I’m reminded of how painting allows for much reflection, and the ability to become more objective of my thoughts and feelings. When I start a work, I have an idea about what I envision, yet I remain open and allow for surprises. I have high hopes for each piece, keeping in mind that after hours of work, still I may not like the final result. This is life. When I look at a blank canvas I see both a mystery and an invitation to bring an image to life. The process of painting is a reminder of the unknown and the ability to move forward regardless. A mixture of uncertainty and excitement hangs over me while working so I try to remind myself, “one stroke at a time.” Perhaps the biggest gift from this work is having the opportunity to slow down and allow myself to be in the moment to reflect. In many ways painting is similar to meditation. In this way, I truly see my work as a practice.
